Saint Zita and the miracle of the cloak

On a freezing Christmas night in the 1250s, Zita, a maid in Lucca for the wealthy Fatinelli family, was preparing to go to the office of matins. Although the church of San Frediano adjoined her masters' house, it was so cold outside that Guglielmo Fatinelli, a quick-tempered man who was often annoyed by the piety of his servant and constantly bullied her, was moved to pity when he saw her going to the night service with only a thin dress on her back, as she had once again given her warm clothes to the poor. He lent her one of his fur-lined pelisses, but, knowing her "excessive" charity, warned her to take great care to return the expensive coat and not to give it to any beggar... A recommendation that Zita, distraught at the sight of an old man shivering in front of the church, immediately forgot. She wrapped the beggar in the cloak and asked him to wait for her outside so that he could go warm himself in the house kitchen. Of course, after the service, the man had disappeared...But what happened the next day was a true miracle.

Les raisons d'y croire :

  • We have a reliable document on the life and miracles of Zita, probably written just after her death in 1272, either by Pagano Fatinelli himself or by one of his relatives. The manuscript remained in the family until 1688, when one of Fatinelli's descendants, Cardinal de Fatinelli, had it transcribed and published in order to spread the story of the saint.
  • This Life of Blessed Zita, virgin of Lucca, faithfully transcribed from a very old manuscript codex, is authentic, and the cardinal's endorsement proves that the Church validated its content.
  • At the time of its publication, the body of Saint Zita had already been exhumed three times (and twice more in the 19th century), and on all three occasions had been found incorrupt - a miracle that continues to this day. In addition, on the occasion of Zita's canonisation process, the Church selected and studied 150 miracles from among the many astonishing events in the life of the Servant of God. The "miracle of the cloak", as it is traditionally called, is one of them. It can therefore be considered authentic.
  • Zita's reputation for holiness was so great that in 1278, just six years after her death, the Bishop of Lucca proceeded to exhume her body, which was tantamount to authorising her cult.
  • The loan of the cloak by her master was perhaps a test of her obedience, as Zita was in the habit of giving everything to the poor, even if it didn't belong to her, which greatly irritated Fatinelli. For Zita to have dared to disobeyed her master, the old beggar's misery must have seemed extreme.
  • Zita's other "weakness" was her piety. She got up before dawn every day to attend matins, never missed daily mass, received Communion frequently and remained in prayer sometimes longer she was allowed to, losing sense of time.
  • That Christmas night, Zita's reaction was quite ordinary. When she realised that the old man and the precious cloak had disappeared, she panicked at the prospect of her master's angry reaction. She even prepared explanations and excuses, claiming that the poor man "looked quite honest" and that he himself had probably been the victim of a thief...

  • Although he didn't question Zita's probity, her master, who had warned her, was understandably furious, and still hadn't calmed down on the afternoon of 25 December. He threatened to fire her immediately. So Zita didn't make up her story. But she reiterated her certainty that the garment would soon be returned.
  • At three o'clock in the afternoon, there was a knock on the palace door. When they opened it, they saw a distinguished, handsome man, much younger than the beggar of the previous day. Although it seemed impossible, Zita asserted that it was in fact the same old man from the previous day, only now looking much younger. In fact, he was holding the lost cloak on his arm, which he returned to Zita, thanking her for the charity she had shown him.
  • As Fatinelli went to question the stranger, the latter disappeared without answering in a flash of light, witnessed by the whole household. Everyone was ready to swear that they had seen Zita's guardian angel.
  • Everyone also experienced an ineffable feeling of joy that lasted for a long time, which is typical of divine phenomena.
  • The clergy of Lucca, who knew of Zita's sanctity, did not doubt this story, and the door of San Frediano, in front of which she lent the cloak to the poor man, is still called Porta del Angelo, the door of the angel.

Synthèse :

Born in 1211 or 1218 in Bozzanello, a village on Monte Sagrati, about fifteen kilometres from Lucca in Tuscany, Zita was the daughter of poor but devout peasants. When she was twelve, they could no longer afford to feed her, so they asked her to look for work. Zita begged for a job and found one with a rich weaver named Fatinelli, a harsh man who soon took a dislike to this young employee who was too pious and virtuous for his taste and who, although so gentle, could defend herself fiercely against men who dared to make inappropriate advances.

Zita, declared patron saint of servants and domestic employees by Pius XII, is an exemplary servant who carried out her household duties so perfectly that the other servants were jealous of her, making her suffer abuse and ridicule. Zita endured all without complaining, seeing her inferior position and the need for obedience as a sure way of becoming a saint. When she reached adolescence, she took a vow of perpetual virginity.

The girl's only "weakness" was her good heart, which led her, in her charitable excesses, to give thoughtlessly in alms, not only of what she possessed, but sometimes of the property of her employers, beyond the permissions they granted her. So they kept an eye on her, even though on several occasions, rewarding her for her charity, Heaven intervened to replace what she had given, as on the day when she distributed beans from her master's supply of provisions during a time of famine. When her master decided to sell the beans and discovered what Zita had done, he went to check the bags and found them full; on another occasion she had filled her apron with bread for the poor and when she was ordered to show what she was hiding there, it was found that the apron was filled with flowers...which became bread again so that she could give alms.

Zita's fervour was such that she often lost track of time in prayer, which could be detrimental to her work, but the angels came to her rescue. One morning, for example, she stayed in church to pray after mass longer than she intended to and realised that she had forgotten to knead and bake the bread - an irreparable delay that would draw reproaches. But when she came home, she found the bread already made and baking in the oven. She attributed this help to her guardian angel, because nobody in the household said they had done her this favour.

Similarly, one winter evening, when she had gone on pilgrimage, as she did every week, to an angelic shrine and had not paid attention to the time, she was brought back to Lucca instantly. A horseman, who had set off well before her, testified that he was stunned to see her arrive before him, even though it was night and the road, lined with precipices, was dangerous. This was attributed to angelic help.

She was up before dawn every morning and never missed Mass, even when, in 1241, the Pope imposed an interdict on Lucca for several years, preventing the celebration of Mass and the sacraments in the town, Zita would go into Pisan territory to receive Holy Communion, a dangerous trip at the time, especially at night; but mysterious strangers befriended Zita on her way.

This piety was soon rewarded, as mystical phenomena became commonplace in Zita's life. Although she had to spend the night outside in the pouring rain, in front of the church where she wanted to hear mass, she was protected from the downpour, which did not drench her or extinguish the candle she was carrying. On other occasions, closed church doors were opened to allow her to take shelter.

Her masters, belatedly recognising her holiness, eventually entrusted her with the household management and expenses.

Stricken with a serious case of influenza, Zita died on 27 April 1272 at the home of her masters. Just as she breathed her last, although it was broad daylight, a star appeared above the Palazzo Fatinelli, eclipsing the sun and warning the population that "the saint was dead". Miracles immediately began to multiply at her tomb.
